Tennessee State Information

In Tennessee, approximately 129,000 children live with grandparents or other relatives caregivers.  Additionally, over 61,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services offers various forms of support to kinship care families.  Children’s Services operates the Child Only TANF/Kinship Care Families First Kinship Care Program, which has a goal to place children with relatives and prevent their entrance into state custody.  The Families First Kinship Care initiative is an additional source of funding to those eligible kinship care families, who alrea receive Child Only TANF grants.  Eligible families have guidelines that must be followed to receive funding.  See the links below for program outline and guide.

Tennessee offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for relative care families.  However, the state is in need of more advocacy from private organizations that would assist with the current government programs.  The state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster system.
