South Carolina State Information

In South Carolina, approximately over 112,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 51,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

Connecting for Kids, a nonprofit organization in South Carolina, has received a three year grant (2009-2012) from the US DHHS Administration for Children & Families family connections. Connecting for Kids is a project directly linked to kinship care resources, education, and assistance. It functions as the kinship navigator in the state and works to provide kinship care families and children with the resources they need to be successful. The project has developed partnerships between universities, government agencies and other nonprofit organizations to assist in the kinship care movement.

South Carolina offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for kinship care families. Through public and private partnerships the state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster system.
