Kentucky State Information

In Kentucky, approximately over 75,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 38,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

The Kentucky Statewide KinCare Steering Committee is the lead organization that supports grandparents and other relative care families. The committee works to help such families obtain assistance, as to become better kinship care families. It is the goal of this committee to provide information, assistance, support, and advocacy for kinship care families. The Kinship Care program also provides financial assistance, and has over 50 support groups across the state. These support groups serve as eyes and ears for the Steering Committee, and assists in referring caregivers and families to the proper organization.

Kentucky offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for relative care families. Through public and private partnerships the state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster system.
