Iowa State Information

In Iowa, approximately over 29,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 13,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

The Iowa Department of Elderly Affairs facilitates Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP), funded though the Brookdale Foundation, which exists to form partnerships with various organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, to provide support groups and education to senior citizens caring for children. Iowa State University also offers services to grandparents and kinship caregivers ranging from special events to support groups.

Iowa offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for relative care families. Through public and private partnerships the state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster system.
