Indiana State Information

In Indiana, approximately over 100,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 48,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

Indiana believes that children are better off when in the care of relatives, and offers various resources to kinship care families. These resources range from clothing allowances, bedding allowances, childcare, education and financial assistance. Kinship Care families in need of assistance should refer to a 2009 memo on the topic.

Purdue University has also been a driving force in the grandparents as parents movement in Indian. The university has created an information disc about the challenges and policies regarding Grandparents as Parents.

Indiana offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for relative care families. Through public and private partnerships the state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster system.
