Hawaii State Information

In Hawaii, approximately over 42,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 14,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

The state of Hawaii, does not offer many services when it comes to relative care families. Families in need of State assistance must apply for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). This is the only form of cash assistance to such families. Hawaii Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP), funded though the Brookdale Foundation, also exists to form partnerships with various organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, to provide support groups and education to senior citizens caring for children. The RAPP in Hawaii is specifically focusing on advocacy for the cause.

Hawaii is lacking when it comes to state funding and advocacy for kinship care families. It is only through the private organizations that kinship care families receive support and assistance.
