Alabama State Information

In Alabama, approximately over 113,000 children live with grandparents or other relative caregivers. Additionally, over 56,000 grandparents reported having their grandchildren living with them.

Alabama offers various resources to kinship care families. The State Department of Human Resources has a kinship care program, which offers support services to relative caregivers to prevent children from entering the foster system. The program assists with legal, medical, and counseling needs; in addition to, clothing, furniture, and some financial support.

The Alabama Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP), funded through the Brookdale Foundation, also exists to form partnerships with various organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, to provide support groups and education to senior citizens caring for children.

Alabama offers a diverse range of services, support, and assistance for kinship families. Through public and private partnerships, the state has been able to place many children with relatives, and prevent their entrance into the foster care system.
